Reader’s Question:

What are the terms and conditions of a Louisiana smoker insurance?

Francis

New Orleans LA

Louisiana smoker insurance is offered at a much higher cost than regular insurance policies for non smokers.  This is true for both term and universal life insurances.  There are times, however, when certain insurance policies offer lower rates upon meeting the conditions set by the company.  Terms and conditions can be adjusted to meet the qualifications of the insured.

Most Louisiana smoker insurance companies have classified what should be part of a smoker and a non smoker.  Certain companies have agreed that people who smoke cigars and pipes can be classified as a non smoker.  This is probably because of the lower nicotine content that is found in cigars and pipes.  It is however dependent on the quantity of the cigars and pipes that you use per day. Insurance companies have imposed their own limits to how many cigars and pipes you smoke for you to be classified as a non smoker.

One of the most practical ways to lower down your premiums is to quit smoking.  Not only can you save from spending too much on smokes, you can also lower down your premiums.  Again Louisiana smoker insurance policies depend on the length you have been sober from smoking.  Some companies will lower your insurance premiums if you quit smoking for one year.  Others however will not take that risk of lowering down your premiums. They will only lower down your premiums to a regular non smoker rate when you have reached five years of being tobacco free.

What you should remember about the terms and conditions set by the smoker insurance is that they should give you a possibility to change your status to a non smoker upon quitting smoking.  You should take note of what is written down in your policy so that in later times you can make the necessary adjustments needed.

Reader’s Question:

Where can I get cheap smoker life insurance in Louisiana?

Wayne

Baton Rouge LA

A cheap and affordable smoker life insurance is hard to find. This is true if you are asking from traditional life insurance companies. The reason for the high rates is that smokers have higher mortality rates. Thus you may be paying for than twice of what a non-smoker would pay.

However this has slowly changed lately. The insurance market has become so competitive that many companies are now looking for their own niches. Figures for example show that around 25% of the US population are smokers. Clearly this is a very good market if you are in the business of insurance. As such, there are now a lot of companies that specialize in selling insurance to smokers. One of the reasons they can do this is that they alter the definition of what a smoker is. Although this may not mean that it becomes cheap, the premium of the smoker life insurance will be relatively lower than what others offer.

To give you an idea of the “new” definition, specialized insurance companies can classify you as non-smoker if you smoke cigars or pipe. For them, smoking is only for those who use cigarettes. There are also companies who set certain limits of cigarettes smoked in a month for you to be considered as non-smoker.

It goes without saying that if you quit smoking, you stand the chance of paying lower rates. I say chance because it will still depend on what company you buy your insurance from. If it is from the traditional ones, you may have to wait for a number of years before they give you the rates that you want. Others though will immediately offer you lower rates if you have stopped smoking for just a year.

The trick is always to look around. Don’t settle for just one company. If you think your current insurance company in Louisiana is charging you a high rate, then find another one. Your money will be spent better if it is the smoker life insurance that you truly want.
